Child Sponsorship

Eighteen-year-old Sirah grew up in Bombali District in northern Sierra Leone, where life revolved around hard work and survival. Her parents were subsistence farmers who struggled daily to provide food for the family, let alone cover the cost of their children’s education.

When Sirah was just two years old, her life took a decisive turn. She was connected with a sponsor and friend, James from the United States of America.

“I’m grateful that James became my friend,” Sirah says with a smile. “Since then, he has supported my family and me in so many ways.”

Through James’ support, Sirah was enrolled in school and received essential learning materials. But access to education remained a challenge. The nearest school was several miles away, and Sirah had to walk long distances each day. Often, she did not return home until after 6 p.m.

“That worried me a lot as a mother, especially thinking about her safety,” recalls Yombo, Sirah’s mother.

The long and exhausting journeys almost forced Sirah to drop out of school. Determined not to give up, she shared her challenges with James. In response, he provided additional support so Sirah could purchase a bicycle, which reduced her travel time and made regular school attendance possible.

“I went through many challenges before I got the bicycle,” Sirah explains. “That support made a big difference in my life.”

James’ support extended beyond education. Sirah’s family lived in a thatch house that leaked badly during the rainy season, putting their safety and health at risk. With James’ assistance, the family was able to build a more secure home in the village.

“Even though I lost my father before we moved into the new house, I am happy because I feel safe now,” Sirah shares quietly.

Today, Sirah is in Senior Secondary School (SSS) 2 and continues to thrive. She lives with her mother and three siblings and has even managed to save some money from the support she receives. Inspired by her own journey, Sirah dreams of becoming a nurse.

With over 5,500 children enrolled in the ChildFund sponsorship program in Bombali District, we continue to leave a lasting impact on the lives of children and their families.
