“ChildFund’s investment in my life is worth it” - Saata

June 13, 2025

“If not for ChildFund’s intervention, I often wonder what would have happened to me, a girl born in an extended family from a very remote area,” Saata reflected. “I might have been married off young or faced abuse.” Her words capture a deep sense of fulfillment and gratitude as she looks back on a journey transformed by opportunity and support.

At just 5 years old, Saata’s path was already marked by struggle. Though she was in class 2, her future was uncertain, until she was sponsored by ChildFund in Kailahun district in Eastern Sierra Leone. That single act of generosity became the turning point in her life.

Through ChildFund’s support, the now 20-year-old received the school essentials many children in her community could only dream of. She got books, uniforms, a school bag, and the encouragement to dream bigger. Her sponsor, Kim Edwards, didn’t just support her education but always wrote to encourage her.

With ChildFund’s support, Saata advanced through school with determination and grace. ChildFund stood by her every step of the way, all the way to university. Today, she is a third-year economics student at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, and she holds a remarkable distinction: she is currently the only honors student in her department.

“I say this with pride, that I am the only honors student in my department. ChildFund’s investment in my life is worth it.”

Saata carries deep gratitude for the support that shaped her journey and hopes her story will inspire more people to invest in the dreams of children just like her.

Thanks to the generosity of our esteemed sponsors, children in our program continue to receive the gift of nutritious food, clean water, healthcare, protection and education, among others.

Saata’s journey is proof that sponsoring a child through ChildFund is an investment with powerful returns. The promising young girl is stepping into womanhood with the tools to chase her dreams—informed, intelligent, wise, strong, bold, courageous, and resilient. Saata has been a strong advocate on ending violence against children in her community and university.

Throughout her journey, Saata has become a passionate advocate for ending violence against children, both in her community and at university. Soon, she will graduate and begin contributing to the development of her country. I really want to thank my sponsor, Kim Edwards, for believing in me and trusting me. Thank you!”

This is the ripple effect of sponsorship. One life changed can unlock countless possibilities. Watch this video for Saata’s full story, as she shares more about her sponsorship journey with ChildFund.
