On World Diabetes Day, Sierra Leone took a major step in its fight against one of the country’s growing health threats. In a ceremony held in Freetown, ChildFund, in partnership with MAP International, officially handed over $25 million worth of diabetes medication to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.

This donation comes at a critical time. A community screening held earlier that day revealed that 1 in 5 people tested had dangerously high blood sugar levels, none of whom were previously diagnosed. The alarming findings have amplified concerns among health officials about the rising tide of non-communicable diseases, particularly diabetes, which is now the fourth leading cause of illness and death in Sierra Leone.

“We are sincerely thankful to ChildFund and MAP International,” said Deputy Minister of Health, Charles Senesie, during the event. “This generous donation will go a long way in addressing diabetes-related health challenges and saving lives.”

Speaking on behalf of ChildFund, Isatu Venn, Director of Programs and Sponsorship, emphasized the importance of sustained partnerships in delivering healthcare support: “These supplies reflect our strong collaboration with the Ministry of Health and our shared goal of building a healthier future, especially for children whose lives are affected by chronic conditions like diabetes.”

Dr. Santigue Sesay, Director of Non-Communicable Diseases at the Ministry, noted that only 8% of people living with diabetes in Sierra Leone are currently receiving treatment, a statistic that underscores the urgent need for accessible care and early diagnosis.

The donated supplies will be distributed across all 16 districts of Sierra Leone, with ChildFund coordinating logistics to ensure even remote communities benefit. The initiative builds on a history of collaboration between the Ministry, ChildFund, and MAP International, who also worked together during the COVID-19 pandemic to strengthen healthcare services and support vulnerable populations.

As the country grapples with the growing burden of chronic illnesses, the donation marks a hopeful milestone in ensuring that life-saving treatment reaches those who need it most.
