ChildFund recognizes that environmental changes pose not only ecological threats but also a profound crisis for child rights, endangering children's survival, development, and future. In response, we implement child-focused, climate-resilient programs that align with Sierra Leone’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plan (NAP).

On 4th to 6th September 2023, the Government of Kenya and the African Union co-hosted the inaugural Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi. Commitments were made by governments, the private sector, multilaterals, banks, philanthropists, and other organisations, that set out concrete, systematic and sustainable plans needed to progress towards Net Zero, and international climate goals on finance and adaptation. This document provides an overview of these commitments. The commitments will be used as a foundation to mobilise urgent action on environmental protection across Africa, and beyond.

This declaration and call to action was developed by children representatives from across the different regions and countries of the African continent. This was done along six thematic groups, namely; Energy Transition, renewable Energy and Green minerals and Manufacturing, Sustainable Agriculture, Land and Water/Ocean use.

This African Leaders Nairobi Declaration on Climate Change and Call to Action seeks to position Africa as a proactive, solution-oriented continent in the global fight against climate change by emphasizing its unique vulnerabilities, untapped potential, and commitment to green growth. It calls for urgent global action to reduce emissions, fulfill climate finance promises, and support a just transition, while outlining Africa’s ambition to pursue climate-positive development pathways. The declaration underscores the need for fair access to investment, recognition of Africa’s natural capital, and strong continental collaboration to achieve shared prosperity, environmental sustainability, and global decarbonization.

This African Leaders Nairobi Declaration on Climate Change and Call to Action seeks to establish a unified African voice on the urgency of addressing climate change and to highlight the continent’s vulnerability despite its minimal contribution to global emissions. It affirms Africa’s commitment to climate action while emphasizing the need for equity, global responsibility, and investment. The declaration aims to rally global support, recognize Africa’s potential as a leader in green development, and push for the full implementation of past climate commitments. It also underscores Africa’s readiness to lead with solutions, harness its renewable energy resources, protect natural ecosystems, and position itself as a key player in global climate mitigation and adaptation efforts.

This concept note spells out clearly the objective of the post Africa Climate Summit (ACS) roadmap and a call to action to: ~ Ensure implementation of the Commitments made by African Heads of States and Government in Nairobi to Drive Green Growth and Climate Finance Solutions for Africa and the World; ~ Mobilise resources for investment in Africa’s natural capital and climate action beyond the $26bn mobilised (noting that the potential commitments in the ACS Nairobi Declaration are in $trillions and not $billion; and ~ Keep the momentum and the vision of the ACS alive.
